Ullo Review and Sulfites
Friends of mine purchased the Ullo because wine has a strong effect on them. I came over to get their opinions and give it a try myself. I’ve noticed when tasting my sinuses become a little stuffy. Throughout the evening we used the Ullo on various red wines. I noticed a big difference in my sinuses, the aroma and flavor of the wines.
We did a comparison with one bottle of wine. With one pour the Ullo was used, another pour of the same bottle was without the Ullo. We found the Ullo pour brought out more aroma and flavor compared to not using the Ullo.
Why Use a Ullo:
- Sulfites in wine are artificial preservatives widely used in winemaking. Sulfites prevents oxidization of the wine.
- The sulfites are no longer required to stop the wine from oxidizing after the wine bottle is opened.
- Ullo purifies the wine by filtering out the sulfites and bitter taste to return the natural taste of the wine.
- This allows other compounds in the wine to flow through unaffected.
- While purifying, the Ullo also aerates the wine.
There are 3 components to the Ullo Wine Purifier – a cup, filter and aerator:
- The cup sits on a wine glass or wine decanter for pouring.
- A filter has ‘Selective Sulfate Capture’ technology to purify one 750 ML bottle of wine
- An aerator introduces oxygen to bring out the aromas and flavor of the wine.
The cup is dishwasher-safe with the silicone stain-resistant.

Inexpensive wines will have more additives and preservatives which prolong the shelf life of the wine. Along with the preservatives and other additives in the wine there are naturally occurring phenomenon known as sulfites.
Are Sulfites Harmful?
Sulfites are harmless, unless you suffer from severe asthma or do not have the particular enzymes necessary to break down sulfites in your body. According to the FDA there is less than 1% of the U.S. population who are sulfite sensitive.
How Much Sulfites Are in Wine?
The number of sulfites that a wine can contain is highly regulated around the world. Wine containing more than 10 parts per million (ppm) of sulfur dioxide must affix to the label ‘contains sulfites’.
Using the Ullo:
Once you place the Ullo on a wine glass or decanter you will notice the wine goes into the glass/decanter very slowly. You will need patience.
Since the flow of the wine is slow, watch carefully. Do not over pour into the Ullo cup. The wine could spill over the cup and you will lose some wine.
The filters are reusable but only for a certain number of pours. Purchases of more filters are required which can become costly.
If you are looking to remove additives and sulfites from the wine the Ullo will met your needs. If sulfites are not a problem the Ullo will bring more enjoyment of the wine as it brings out the aromas and produces the natural flavors of the wine.
